Manchmal werden Erwartungen geschürt, die sich nicht erfüllen. Was wurde nicht alles über den Auftritt vom Bundeskanzler außer Dienst, Sebastian Kurz, spekuliert? Er wird eine Rede halten, dann wieder doch nicht.

Bekommt Kurz mehr Applaus als sein Nachfolger Karl Nehammer? Was dann auf der Bühne passierte, hatte niemand auf der Rechnung. Derjenige, der die 1.300 Gäste (darunter 524 Delegierte) euphorisierte, war nicht Sebastian Kurz, sondern Ex-Kanzler Wolfgang Schüssel.

Beide wurden auf der Bühne interviewt. Während Sebastian Kurz viel über seinen Spagat als Vater und Vielreisender (20 Tage im Monat) und schlaflose Nächte parlierte, sprach Schüssel den ÖVPlern aus dem Herzen.

Er habe als Kanzler 300.000 Demonstranten am Heldenplatz erlebt, die gegen die Pensionsreform auf die Straße gingen. Aber genau diese Reform habe das Pensionssystem gerettet. Dazu kamen noch die wöchentlichen „Donnerstagsdemonstrationen“ gegen die Koalition.

Er bedankte sich für 20 Jahre in der Politik, wo er viele Freunde fürs Leben gefunden habe. Der Altkanzler Kurz habe auch dem Kanzler außer Dienst Schüssel viel zu verdanken, weil er ihn als 15-Jähriger bewunderte, mit welchem Mut Schüssel Reformen durchgezogen habe.
He expressed his gratitude for 20 years in politics, where he had made many friends for life. Former Chancellor Kurz also owed a lot to Chancellor Schüssel, who was out of office, because as a 15-year-old he admired the courage with which Schüssel had pushed through reforms.
Am Ende gab es dann doch noch stehende Ovationen für die beiden Ex-ÖVP-Kanzler.
In the end, there was a standing ovation for the two former Austrian People's Party chancellors.
