Wirtschaftsministerin Schramböck tritt zurück: "Es war mir eine Ehre"

Die Volkspartei muss wieder einmal ihr Regierungsteam umgestalten. Nach dem überraschenden Rücktritt von Elisabeth Köstinger als Landwirtschaftsministerin, folgte noch am Montag jener von Wirtschaftsministerin Margarete Schramböck.

The People's Party is once again having to reshuffle its government team. After the surprising resignation of Elisabeth Köstinger as Minister of Agriculture, the resignation of Economics Minister Margarete Schramböck followed on Monday.

Schramböck stand bereits bei den vergangenen Regierungsumbildungen zur Disposition, in einer fünfminütigen Videobotschaft erklärte sie sich Montagnachmittag via Social Media. Dabei stellte Schramböck ihre inhaltliche Arbeit in den Vordergrund.

Schramböck was already up for grabs during the past government reshuffles, and she explained herself in a five-minute video message via social media on Monday afternoon. In her message, Schramböck focused on her substantive work.

Auf die Hintergründen ihres - wohl nicht ganz freiwilligen - Rücktritts ging sie nicht ein. "Nach fast fünf Jahren in der österreichischen Politik lege ich heute mein Amt als Wirtschafts- und Digitalministerin zurück", sagt Schramböck im Video.

She did not elaborate on the background to her - probably not entirely voluntary - resignation. "After almost five years in Austrian politics, I am resigning today from my post as Minister of Economics and Digital Affairs," Schramböck says in the video.

Sie könne sich noch gut an den Moment erinnern, als Sebastian Kurz sie angerufen und gefragt habe, ob sie nicht Ministerin werden wolle. "Ich habe diesen Schritt nie bereut." Der Wirtschaftsstandort Österreich sei ein solider, mit erfolgreichen Unternehmen.

She said she can still remember the moment when Sebastian Kurz called her and asked her if she didn't want to become a minister. "I have never regretted this step." Austria is a solid business location with successful companies.

Ihr sei es gelungen, große und neue Investitionen nach Österreich zu bringen. Im Bereich der Chip-Produktionen und der Pharma-Industrie sei Österreich wettbewerbsfähiger als andere: "Wir haben gegen Deutschland und die USA gewonnen."

She had succeeded in bringing large and new investments to Austria. In chip production and the pharmaceutical industry, Austria is more competitive than others: "We have won against Germany and the USA."

Sie habe den Grundstein für neue Akzente gelegt, spart Schramböck nicht mit Selbstlob. Auch bei der Lehre, den exportierenden Unternehmen und der Digitalisierung habe sie viel weitergebracht, betont die scheidende Ministerin.

Schramböck is not sparing with her self-praise, saying that she has laid the foundation for new directions. The outgoing minister also emphasized that she had made a great deal of progress in the areas of teaching, exporting companies and digitization.

"Trotz Covid-Krise sind wir gut durchgekommen und unsere Unternehmen sind erfolgreich am internationalen Markt." Auch bei der digitalen Verwaltung sei man sehr stark vorangekommen und mit Estland sowie Malta unter Top-3-Nationen in Europa, behauptet Schramböck.

"Despite the Covid crisis, we have come through well and our companies are successful on the international market." Schramböck also claims that the company has made very strong progress in digital administration and, together with Estonia and Malta, is among the top three nations in Europe.

"Nun, nach fast fünf Jahren in der Politik, ist es für mich Zeit, Danke zu sagen. Denn das alles erreicht man nur im Schulterschluss und gemeinsam", so Schramböck, die sich "ganz besonders" bei Kurz und Bundeskanzler Karl Nehammer bedankt.

"Now, after almost five years in politics, it is time for me to say thank you. Because you can only achieve all this by standing shoulder to shoulder and working together," said Schramböck, who expressed her "very special" thanks to Kurz and Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

"Es war mir eine Ehre für Österreich zu arbeiten und ich danke für das Vertrauen." Wer auf Schramböck folgen könnte, blieb vorerst offen. Eine Option: Das Wirtschaftsministerium wird in das Arbeitsministerium von Martin Kocher (ÖVP) eingegliedert.

"It has been an honor to work for Austria and I thank you for your trust." Who might succeed Schramböck remained open for now. One option: the Ministry of Economics will be incorporated into the Ministry of Labor of Martin Kocher (ÖVP).
