Die NEOS haben den Europatag am Montag zum Anlass genommen, sich hinter die im EU-Parlament ventilierte Idee eines Verfassungskonvent zur Weiterentwicklung der EU zu stellen.

Das Ziel: Die "Vereinigten Staaten von Europa". Beide erinnerten auch an die zu Ende gehende EU-Zukunftskonferenz.

Bei dieser habe sich nicht nur gezeigt, dass die Bürgerinnen und Bürger die Notwendigkeit einer Weiterentwicklung erkannt hätten, sondern in diesen Fragen auch viel weiter seien als die nationalen Regierungen, so Meinl-Reisinger: "Sie wollen ein Europa, das liefert."

Derzeit fehle der EU die Strategiefähigkeit, auch wenn sie in den vergangenen Wochen angesichts des Angriffs Russlands auf die Ukraine erstaunlich geschlossen und entscheidungsstark agiert habe.

Für ein Ende der Blockademöglichkeiten sprach sich auch Gamon aus, denn "das hält uns wirklich zurück als EU". Auch sie erinnerte an äußere Bedrohungen und verlangte Entschlossenheit in Außenpolitik, Sicherheit und Verteidigung sowie Unabhängigkeit in Energiefragen.
Gamon also argued for an end to blocking options, because "that really holds us back as an EU." She also recalled external threats and called for decisiveness in foreign policy, security and defense, as well as independence in energy matters.
Im zuständigen Ausschuss für konstitutionelle Fragen des EU-Parlaments würden entsprechende Vertragsänderungen bereits vorbereitet, damit sich der Europäische Rat ab 24. Juni damit beschäftigen könne, so Gamon.
In the responsible committee for constitutional issues of the EU Parliament, corresponding treaty amendments are already being prepared so that the European Council can deal with them from June 24, Gamon said.
Wichtig sei nun, dass die Mitgliedsländer - speziell auch Österreich - nicht auf der Bremse stünden. "Europa war ja wirklich lange genug in der Warteschleife", sagte sie: "Wir glauben, dass es jetzt Zeit ist, diese Schritte für NEOS ganz klar in Richtung Vereinigte Staaten von Europa zu setzen."
The important thing now, she said, is that the member states - especially Austria - do not put on the brakes. "Europe has really been on hold long enough," she said: "We believe it is now time to take these steps for NEOS very clearly in the direction of a United States of Europe."
