Gute Kunst ist bekanntlich offen für Interpretationen. Doch diese können auch aus dem Ruder laufen, wie der Fall einer Skulptur zeigt, die demnächst am renommierten Imperial College in London aufgestellt werden soll.
Good art is known to be open to interpretation. But these can also get out of hand, as the case of a sculpture soon to be installed at the renowned Imperial College in London shows.
Studierende der Uni protestieren gegen die über sechs Meter hohe Figur, die vom an sich unkontroversiellen britischen Bildhauer Antony Gormley stammt und diesem zufolge eine hockende Figur, übersetzt in architektonische Formen, zeigen soll.
Students at the university are protesting the figure, which is more than six meters high and is by the British sculptor Antony Gormley, who is not controversial in itself and, according to him, is supposed to show a squatting figure translated into architectural forms.
Laut dem Künstler soll die Haltung das Lauern und Gespanntsein, das auch neugierigen Wissenschaftern eigen ist, darstellen, deswegen heißt das Werk "Alert" ("Wachsam, Aufmerksam"). Doch vielen erscheint der Teil, der in Gormleys Sicht ein Knie sein soll, als überdimensionaler, erigierter Penis.
According to the artist, the posture is meant to represent the lurking and tensed state that is also inherent in curious scientists, which is why the work is called "Alert" ("Watchful, Attentive"). But to many, the part that is supposed to be a knee in Gormley's view appears as an oversized erect penis.
Der Einspruch wurde von der Studierendenvertretung bereits vor längerer Zeit erhoben, das Fachmedium Art Newspaper thematisierte ihn aber erst jetzt.
The objection was raised by the student council some time ago, but the professional medium Art Newspaper only addressed it now.
"Wenngleich die vom Künstler intendierte Form unsere Gemeinschaft wissenschaftlicher Forschung darstellen sollte, tut das die phallische Interpretation nicht", heißt es in dem Papier.
"Although the artist's intended form should represent our community of scientific inquiry, the phallic interpretation does not," the paper states.
"Manche könnten die männliche Form in dieser Interpretation als ausschließend wahrnehmen, zumal Geschlechtergerechtigkeit und Inklusion in unserer Gemeinschaft ein großes Thema ist". Der Titel "Alert" könnte auch als Hinweis auf die Erektion gelesen werden.
"Some might perceive the masculine form in this interpretation as exclusionary, especially since gender equity and inclusion is a big issue in our community." The title "Alert" could also be read as a reference to erection.
Die "Riesenpenis"-Interpretation würde zudem Spott auf die Universität ziehen und deren Reputation schaden.
The "giant penis" interpretation would also draw ridicule on the university and damage its reputation.
Die Studierendenvertretung bekundete zudem ihren Unmut darüber, bei der Auswahl der Skulptur, die am Campus des College im Stadtteil South Kensington aufgestellt werden soll, nicht eingebunden gewesen zu sein.
The student council also expressed its displeasure at not having been involved in the selection of the sculpture, which will be placed on the college's campus in the South Kensington neighborhood.
Finanziert wird die Skulptur vom indischen Millliardär Brahmal Vasudevan, einem Abgänger des Imperial College, der als Finanzunternehmer zu Reichtum gelangt war und bereits andere Projekte der Uni gesponsert hatte.
The sculpture is being financed by Indian billionaire Brahmal Vasudevan, a graduate of Imperial College who had become wealthy as a financial entrepreneur and had already sponsored other projects at the university.
